Conduct research that participates in scholarly communication conversations.
Artifact 1
"The Framework of Success: Self-Image through the Lens of Dale Carnegie"
The following essay was written for Communication Criticism, with Dr. Theon Hill. The essay was written as a means of connecting communication theories to the work of Dale Carnegie. It, specifically, offers a new perspective on the scholarly conversation of communication apprehension, and its roots in public speaking. The essay explores the connection between the self-image and how people communicate in regards to it. Comparing Dale Carnegie's public speaking program to Kenneth Burke's dramatic pentad enlivens the framework of success, and narrows it down to self-image.
Artifact 2
"The Scarab and the Backcloth: An Analysis of Symbols in the Moviegoer"
The following essay explores the symbolism in Walker Percy's, "The Moviegoer," which is a nonfiction novel, heavily vested in Philosophy and Catholicism. I wrote this in the Media, Religion, and Culture class taught by Dr. Read Schuchardt. The theories promoted by the essay are supported by color theory, shape symbols, history, mythology, etc. One of the most stretching aspects of this essay was the connecting of the image to the word. Being a philosophy book of extreme density, narrowing down the abstract nature of the book to the concrete nature of the symbolism requires patience and creativity. As a media major, this is exactly the sort of discipline that we seek to refine.
Artifact 3
"Interview with Dr. Michael Wilder"
In an interview with Dr. Michael Wilder, I sought to uncover what differentiates a successful artist from an unsuccessful one. The motivation for this field research was to debunk the stigma of art being risky or unlikely to succeed as a career. In the project, we were asked to write a professional email to connect with our interviewee. Below is the memo for the interview, which records the topic and conversations we had in minor detail. The interview was not recorded, as I did not have permission to do so.
